Maine, this is for you.
*shakes head*

the loss in Maine today was a big let down for LGBT rights, especially since so many activists thought it would pass. As a transman who cannot currently legally marry (to marry you need a copy of your birth certificate, in my state of birth the only way to change the legal sex on your birth certificate is after you’ve had a hysterectomy and bottom surgery, which I cannot currently receive due to financial constraints) I know firsthand that it is not only lesbians and gays who are impacted by marriage inequality, transpeople are too. Marriage inequality impacts ALL queer people. Despite this set back we need to keep working as a community towards achieving the rights we deserve.

Fuck you Maine. I’m just speechless »

I know it’s easy to say “fuck Maine” and be really angry about last night. Trust me, I go to the University of Maine and I’m furious. But the important thing is that this doesn’t stop here. 31 states in a row have voted down same-sex marriage. But 31 states have VOTED on it. That means they’re talking about it, something that was unthinkable until recently. This also puts more pressure on the president and Washington to address the issue. We need to keep speaking out against ignorance and prejudice, and keep demanding equal rights. No civil rights have ever been granted through popular vote. That’s nonsense. The people are the ones who discriminate! It’s up to the federal government to overturn DOMA, DADT, and every other discriminatory bill that has been passed. We may have lost in Maine, but the fight does continue. The general message here in Maine is mixed. Yes, there is an undeniable sense of sadness and loss in the air. But there is also a renewed resolve and determination to see this through. I’m not quitting.
